Winter Park Resort and the Mountain

One of the best things about a Winter Park ski vacation is the bang for the buck that you can still get relative to other ski destinations, especially booking through Ripley's Mountain Adventures. Here's the scoop. Winter Park Resort started out as an extension of the Denver Parks and Recreation System in the 1940's. This huge resort boasting unparraleled terrain in many catagories was run primarliy by the city government for over 50 years, a factor that helped preserve the unique noncommercial, unpretentious, and authentic ski town atmosphere that the town of Winter Park and Winter Park Resort still enjoy to this day. In the 90's the city of Denver decided it needed some help to compete as a viable destination resort in Colorado and signed a joint marketing agreement with Intrawest ULC, the same company responsible for the revitalization of Whistler, Copper Mountain, and multiple other destination resorts throughout North America.

Since the arrival of Intrawest, the already impressive terrain has been supplemented with additional new terrain and huge investements have been made to the on mountain infrastructure to bring the lift system up to date . With 3,060 skiable acres, Winter Park is now one of the largest resorts in Colorado. That distinction, combined with owning the title of most average annual snowfall of any major Colorado destination resort, makes for quite an impressive combination. Conveniently located 67 miles NW of Denver, Winter Park is also the closest major ski destination to Denver.

The terrain at Winter Park is often divided into 5 distinct sections consisting of Winter Park Mountain, Vasquez Ridge, Mary Jane, Vasquez Cirque, and Parsenn Bowl.. Mary Jane is actually 3 seperate mountains, Mary Jane, Vaquez Cirque, and Parsenn Bowl Mary Jane has its own base area (with limited amenities) as well as having skiable access from the Winter Park side. Mary Jane has long been considered the best mogul skiing in North America because of its 2,600 plus feet of vertical terrain consisting of 70 trails, the majority of which are upper intermediate to expert mogul runs. There is also intermediate to advanced above treeline skiing at Parsenn Bowl, newly accessible by the Panorama Express, a 6 person High Speed Chair installed in 2007, as well as in bounds extreme back country like terrain located in Vasquez Cirque which requires a short hike from the top of Parsenn Bowl.

Winter Park Mountain has a well rounded and diverse selection of terrain including an abundant collection of beginner runs clustered together and accessible from their own lifts on the west side of the mountain. Out of 73 trails located on what is referred to as the Winter Park side, your terrain split is 28% beginner, 21% intermediate, 33% advanced, and 18% most difficult along with a full service base area. Newly developed Base Area Lodging on the Winter Park side consisting of the ski in ski out Zephyr Mountain Lodge, Frasers Crossing, and Founders Point Condominiums, both a short walk to the lifts, are the most convenient to skiing. The town of Winter Park where the majority of lodging, shopping, and restaurants are located, is only 2 miles from the resort. A large amount of lodging is located in town or between town and the resort including the "Old Town" section of Winter Park that borders the west side of the resort. Winter Park Resort is conveniently accessible by the comprehensive complimentary town shuttle system that generally renders driving to and from the resort from town unnecessary from a convenience standpoint. The town of Fraser, locate 3 miles from the town of Winter Park, and 5 miles from Winter Park Resort, also offers a sizable lodging base consisting mostly of options on the moderate end of the scale. Fraser lodging has a few newer luxury options sprinkled in as well.
